Uncover Your Local History With Original Cottages

England and Wales, unbeknownst to many, is a rich site of both natural, and man-made history, spanning thousands, if not millions, of years. By getting involved with archaeological digs and excavations, and visiting these sites, you can become an integral part of this history, and help to keep it alive. Over the past few years, several archaeological discoveries have been made in England and Wales, causing a spike in public interest in the work. The excavation of King Richard III’s remains underneath a car park in Leicester in 2015 made front page news, for example, and got the whole nation thinking about what could be lying beneath our surface.

But a true archaeologist, paleontologist, or lover of all things historic, needs time to properly explore, and a comfortable place to rest their head after a long day of discovery. What better way to wind down in an evening than in one of our holiday cottages, a great deal of which are located very close to, or within commutable distance, of some of England and Wales’ most significant historic sites?

The Jurassic Coast between Devon and Dorest is famed for its dramatic and awe-inspiring natural coastline that has formed over millions of years. Now a World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast is a hotspot for fossil collectors. Our Jurassic Coast Cottages span the breadth of this 95 mile area. Charmouth and Lyme Regis are considered some of the best places to find fossils, particularly in the winter months. We have properties in Charmouth, and the nearby villages of Axmouth and West Bay, which would put you right on this section of fruitful shoreline.

Our Northumberland cottages place you right in the heart of one of England’s most historic counties. Northumberland, famed for its castles and monasteries, some of which date as far back at the Roman era, is a brilliant place to visit for those seeking ancient archaeological sites. Hadrian’s Wall is also a popular attraction, and is easily accessible by car from any accommodation in the Northumberland and Cumbria regions. The most recent discovery made there was in 2019, when archaeologists discovered Roman graffiti in the remains of a quarry near the wall in Carlisle.

The North Norfolk Coast, also known as the Deep History Coast, is another prime spot for fossil hunting, fun for all ages, and this is another area where we have plenty of homey properties perfect for your historical holiday. Our cottages on the Norfolk Coast are located in places that are known for rock pooling and fossil hunting, such as Sheringham and Cromer.

We are also proud sponsors of the Festival of Archaeology and will be offering a discount to attendees and to CBA members.
